Woodjoint products and
our Commitment to Quality
Who we are... We also do custom
work. If you are in need of a moulding that does not appear in our
catalogue we can make the cutters to produce your moulding. Such orders
would be subject to fees for machine setup and profile grinding of cutters, and would require a minimum quantity for feisability. Retailers and contractors,

What you need to know about birchGrades of Birch that we use.As with most other lumber species, Canadian yellow birch is graded usually into either SLT/BTR (Select & Better) or COM (Common). SLT/BTR is the better grade here and it is the only grade of lumber we use in all species. But yellow birch is further graded into two sub-grades called “Sap” and “Regular” plus a third sub-grade called “Unselected” which basically is a mixture of some Sap and some Regular. Unselected is graded without regard for colour. For about the past decade we have produced our birch products out of “SLT/BTR Unselected for colour” but doing so is becoming increasingly difficult.Explanation of GradesSap birch is completely clear white sapwood on one face and meets the standards for ‘select’ on the opposite face. Regular birch may have significant red and brown areas or streaks on both faces. Of course Sap birch is much more costly than Regular. The red wood is heartwood from the center of the log and the white is the younger wood on the outside of the log. It is difficult to cut a wide sap grade board from the log without getting some heartwood, thus making wide sapwood boards rare.SizesBirch is a small tree in both height and circumference and it rarely grows straight. All these factors make it difficult and more costly to get wide or long boards in any grade of birch. Suppliers try to push 8 ft birch at lower prices than 9 – 12 ft as the 8’s are in surplus. Of course wide and long boards in Sap are even more costly and harder to get. We cannot ask for 6 inch and wider in Sap birch, suppliers simply reply with “unavailable”.AvailabilityNearly all mills have ceased production of Unselected birch and are now separating it into lifts of all sap or all regular as soon as the boards are sawn. This is making it more difficult for us to get consistency in the products that we sell. We don’t want to switch to all regular birch as many of our customers will complain about the colour. We don’t want to switch to all sap birch because many of our customers will complain about the towering prices. Sincerely, B.Sc.
