Woodjoint products and our Commitment to Quality

Who we are...
Woodjoint Manufacturing Inc. has been a significant manufacturer of quality hardwood products in Newfoundland since 1987. We provide companies across the island and into the Maritimes with hardwood products such as colonial casings, crowns, flooring trims, kitchen cabinet framing, stair treads, handrail, and posts. We use six main wood species; basswood, oak, birch, maple, cherry, and ash and our prices are competitive with the current market.

What we have to offer...
All of our products are made from #1 prime lumber and are fully guaranteed to be 99% to 100% knot and split free and free of mineral stain. All mouldings other than door trim sets are packed in bundles of random length. Most bundles have some short lengths, usually not more than three pieces. No pieces are less than three ft.

Our laminating division is now turning out stair treads, handrails, square newel posts and spindles of various sizes, and wooden handrail brackets. All of our laminated products are made from selected materials in Oak, Birch, and Maple. All lumber is ordered oversize to eliminate split ends. All rough material is dressed four sides & perfectly square before gluing and only high strength moisture resistant glue is used to prevent separation of joints. We offer stair treads in six standard sizes plus we can make custom size treads any width up to 24" and any length up to 12 ft.

We offer prefinished products. All of our flooring trims are available with a clear durable finish. It is possible for us to provide any of our other products with this clear finish however most other products are not stocked prefinished. Please allow us time to prepare orders of prefinished materials.

We also do custom work. If you are in need of a moulding that does not appear in our catalogue we can make the cutters to produce your moulding. Such orders would be subject to fees for machine setup and profile grinding of cutters, and would require a minimum quantity for feisability.

Lastly we offer quantity pricing. Usually on orders of ten bundles or more of a particular mould we will offer a reduced rate. Again on such orders please enquire for pricing.

Our commitment to quality...
At Woodjoint we stand by the quality of our products. We believe in putting out only top grade products, every foot we sell is the very best we can provide and is usable by your customer. We have built our reputation on these principals and are known throughout the island as a manufacturer of quality products. If you happen to receive materials from us that do not meet this standard please let us know and we will replace the materials at no cost to you, provided they have not been altered in any way.

What you need to know about birch

Grades of Birch that we use.

As with most other lumber species, Canadian yellow birch is graded usually into either SLT/BTR (Select & Better) or COM (Common). SLT/BTR is the better grade here and it is the only grade of lumber we use in all species. But yellow birch is further graded into two sub-grades called “Sap” and “Regular” plus a third sub-grade called “Unselected” which basically is a mixture of some Sap and some Regular. Unselected is graded without regard for colour. For about the past decade we have produced our birch products out of “SLT/BTR Unselected for colour” but doing so is becoming increasingly difficult.

Explanation of Grades

Sap birch is completely clear white sapwood on one face and meets the standards for ‘select’ on the opposite face. Regular birch may have significant red and brown areas or streaks on both faces. Of course Sap birch is much more costly than Regular. The red wood is heartwood from the center of the log and the white is the younger wood on the outside of the log. It is difficult to cut a wide sap grade board from the log without getting some heartwood, thus making wide sapwood boards rare.

Sizes

Birch is a small tree in both height and circumference and it rarely grows straight. All these factors make it difficult and more costly to get wide or long boards in any grade of birch. Suppliers try to push 8 ft birch at lower prices than 9 – 12 ft as the 8’s are in surplus. Of course wide and long boards in Sap are even more costly and harder to get. We cannot ask for 6 inch and wider in Sap birch, suppliers simply reply with “unavailable”.

Availability

Nearly all mills have ceased production of Unselected birch and are now separating it into lifts of all sap or all regular as soon as the boards are sawn. This is making it more difficult for us to get consistency in the products that we sell. We don’t want to switch to all regular birch as many of our customers will complain about the colour. We don’t want to switch to all sap birch because many of our customers will complain about the towering prices. Sincerely, B.Sc. Mark Mercer Managing Director
